Objective: The current study investigated whether differences existed in dating anxiety and fear of intimacy between individuals with childhood-onset asthma and individuals without a chronic illness. Analyses were also conducted to determine if dating anxiety or fear of intimacy were predictors of health-related quality of life in individuals with asthma and healthy controls. Additionally, potential gender differences in dating anxiety and fear of intimacy in individuals with childhood-onset asthma were explored. Methods: College undergraduates at least 17 years of age who self-identified as having childhood asthma were randomly matched by age and gender to healthy control participants. Results: There were no significant differences between self-identified participants with asthma and matched healthy controls on the Dating Anxiety Scale or Fear of Intimacy Scale. However, dating anxiety was a significant predictor of mental health-related quality of life in participants with asthma but not in matched health controls. Fear of intimacy was not a significant predictor of mental or physical health-related quality of life in individuals with asthma. In addition, women with asthma endorsed significantly more dating anxiety and lower physical health-related quality of life than males with asthma. Conclusion: College students with asthma appear to experience similar levels of dating anxiety and fear of intimacy than healthy college students; however, their anxiety about dating may have a larger effect on health-related quality of life than healthy individuals.

This signals the need for a radically different approach, one that involves touching on the sensitive personal matters that could be the key to helping people take their asthma — and their medicines — more seriously. Thinking bigger, what if engaging in these conversations could open neglected research avenues that could be delaying the discovery of better treatments, and ultimately, a cure?
In a recent Asthma UK health activation campaign, we brought to attention the impact of asthma on sex and relationships. In our Asthma and Your Love Life survey respondents shared their deepest fears about dating and having sex with asthma — with concerns ranging from not being able to enjoy long kisses without getting symptoms, to having a full-blown asthma attack after an orgasm. This has enabled us to trigger a conversation around asthma that focuses on the importance of self-care and taking medicines as prescribed.
As this newly-published study by the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research shows, the evidence continues to pile up in support of self-management as the most effective way to reduce both loss of control and use of healthcare services. The next question, then, is how do we encourage people to self-manage? This paper suggests that effective self-management should be tailored to cultural, clinical and demographic characteristics and is most effective when delivered in the context of proactive long-term condition management.
Truly personalised care must take into account the impact of asthma on relationships and the lack of discussion around sex and relationships that currently means silent misery for many. Opening conversations up to sex and romance, and how asthma could be getting in the way, could encourage your patients to reconsider their self-care and feel more empowered to get their asthma under control.
Asthma UK is funding numerous research projects to help us better understand, and ultimately cure, asthma.

The difficulties of dating with asthma and all of the factors that come into play during just one date.
Respiratory syncytial virus RSV is the most common respiratory pathogen in infants and young children worldwide. Furthermore, epidemiologic evidence has been accumulating that RSV lower respiratory tract infection in infants may be linked to subsequent development of recurrent wheezing and asthma in childhood. This article reviews the epidemiological evidence linking RSV and asthma and some new hypotheses of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of post-viral airway inflammation and hyperreactivity that have been proposed to explain the epidemiologic link.
New epidemiologic studies have suggested that viral pathogens other than RSV, especially human rhinoviruses HRV , may play an important role in the inception of atopic asthma. Also, recent experimental evidence is challenging the widely accepted axiom that RSV is cleared from immunocompetent hosts within weeks from the onset of the infection. In particular, bone marrow stromal cells may be a frequent target of human RSV infection, develop structural and functional changes when infected, participate actively in the pathogenesis of the acute disease, and harbor the virus chronically allowing persistence of the infection.
RSV — and possibly other common respiratory pathogens — play an important role not only in the exacerbation, but also in the inception of asthma. The latter effect may involve the persistence of latent virus in extrapulmonary tissues, similar to what has been recently found for some bacterial species. The most immediate consequence of these discoveries is that future prophylactic and therapeutic strategies for common infections caused by viral or bacterial pathogens may have to address the coverage of remote sites of latent persistence or replication, in order to avoid chronic sequelae recurrent wheezing and asthma.
Seasonal outbreaks occur each year during the winter months throughout the world, although onset, peak, and duration of the season vary from one year to the next and are difficult to predict. In the United States and throughout the northern hemisphere, the annual epidemics usually begin in November, peaking in January or February and ending in May.
Regional variability is significant, with the sub-tropical areas like Florida showing an endemic pattern and less predictable epidemic peaks.
